Japan Tourist Visa (Temporary Visitor Visa)

The Japan Tourist Visa, also known as the Temporary Visitor Visa, is issued to foreign nationals who wish to visit Japan for tourism, sightseeing, or to visit friends or relatives. It allows short stays typically up to 90 days and does not permit paid work.

Process

  • Begin by checking whether your nationality requires a tourist visa or is eligible for visa-free entry under Japan’s bilateral agreements.
  • If a visa is required, complete the visa application form and prepare your valid passport, recent passport-sized photograph, confirmed round-trip flight tickets, hotel bookings or invitation letter from a sponsor in Japan, and proof of financial means such as recent bank statements.
  • Submit your application to the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country of residence, along with all supporting documents.
  • Pay the visa processing fee (if applicable, around 3,000 JPY for single-entry) and attend a short interview if requested.
  • Visa processing typically takes 5 to 7 working days.
  • Once approved, the visa will be stamped in your passport, allowing you to enter Japan for the approved duration without the right to work.

Japan Student Visa

The Japan Student Visa is designed for foreign nationals accepted to study at a Japanese university, language school, or vocational institution. It permits full-time study and limited part-time work rights under certain conditions.

Process

  • Start by applying to and receiving an official admission letter from a recognized Japanese educational institution.
  • Once accepted, the institution will submit a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) application on your behalf to the Immigration Services Agency in Japan.
  • When the COE is issued (usually within 4–8 weeks), the school will send it to you.
  • Prepare your documents including your passport, completed visa application form, COE, recent photograph, academic transcripts, financial proof showing the ability to cover tuition and living costs, and a personal statement.
  • Submit your visa application along with these documents to the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country and pay the visa fee (generally around 3,000–6,000 JPY).
  • Once approved, your visa will be issued and affixed to your passport.
  • Upon arrival in Japan, your residence card (Zairyu Card) will be issued at the airport if staying more than 3 months, and you must register your local address at the city office within 14 days.
