The Switzerland Tourist Visa, officially a Schengen Visa (Type C), allows non-EU/EEA nationals to travel to Switzerland and other Schengen countries for tourism, leisure, or family visits for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period.

Process

  • Start by confirming whether you need a Schengen visa based on your nationality.
  • Then, complete the official visa application form, which can be downloaded from the Swiss embassy or visa center’s website.
  • Prepare all required documents including a valid passport (with at least two blank pages and validity extending three months beyond your intended stay), recent passport-size photos, round-trip flight reservations, hotel bookings, travel itinerary, and travel health insurance covering a minimum of €30,000 valid throughout the Schengen area.
  • You must also provide proof of sufficient financial means, usually in the form of recent bank statements, salary slips, or a sponsorship letter.
  • Book an appointment with the Swiss embassy, consulate, or visa application center (such as VFS Global), attend the appointment, submit your application, and pay the visa fee of €80.
  • The application is typically processed within 10 to 15 business days, after which the visa will be issued and affixed to your passport for short-term travel.

Switzerland Student Visa (National Visa – Type D)

The Switzerland Student Visa (Type D) allows non-EU/EEA nationals to pursue full-time education at a recognized Swiss university, technical institute, or private academic institution. It permits long-term residence for the duration of study.

Process

  • First, apply to and receive an official admission letter from a recognized educational institution in Switzerland.
  • Next, fill out the national visa (Type D) application form and book an appointment at the Swiss embassy or consulate in your country of residence.
  • Prepare the necessary documents including your valid passport, admission letter, proof of sufficient financial means (CHF 21,000–24,000 per year), proof of paid tuition fees, a motivation letter, a detailed CV, and proof of accommodation in Switzerland.
  • You must also submit proof of medical insurance valid in Switzerland, academic records, and a clean criminal background check.
  • Submit the documents at your visa appointment, pay the visa fee (usually around CHF 88–CHF 100), and attend a visa interview.
  • Once your visa is approved, you can travel to Switzerland and must register your address at the local Residents' Registry Office within 14 days of arrival.
  • Your student residence permit will be issued by the cantonal migration authority for the duration of your course.
