UK Tourist Visa (Standard Visitor Visa)

The UK Standard Visitor Visa allows foreign nationals to visit the UK for tourism, family visits, short business trips, or attending events. It typically permits a stay of up to 6 months and does not allow any form of paid work.

Process

  • Begin by checking whether your nationality requires a visitor visa to enter the UK.
  • If required, go to the official UK government website and complete the Standard Visitor Visa application form online.
  • Prepare your documents including a valid passport, recent passport-size photograph, details of your travel itinerary, hotel or accommodation bookings, return flight details, and financial proof such as bank statements to show you can support yourself during the stay.
  • You may also include an invitation letter if visiting family or friends.
  • Once the application is complete, pay the visa fee (currently £115 for a 6-month visa) and book a biometric appointment at a local visa application center.
  • Attend the appointment to provide your biometrics (fingerprints and photograph) and submit your passport and supporting documents.
  • Visa processing usually takes around 15 working days, after which you will receive a decision and your passport with the visa sticker.

UK Student Visa (Student Route – formerly Tier 4)

The UK Student Visa under the Student Route allows non-UK nationals to study full-time at approved UK institutions. It permits part-time work during term and full-time work during breaks, depending on the level of study.

Process

  • Start by applying to and receiving a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed UK university or college.
  • Once the CAS is issued, complete the Student Visa application online through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal.
  • Gather the required documents including your valid passport, CAS, proof of sufficient financial means (tuition fees + living expenses), English language test results (such as IELTS), academic records, and a Tuberculosis (TB) test certificate if applicable based on your country of residence.
  • Pay the visa fee (currently £490) and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which grants access to the UK’s National Health Service.
  • Book and attend a biometric appointment at a visa application center, where you’ll provide fingerprints and a photo.
  • If approved, you will receive a visa vignette in your passport valid for 30–90 days to enter the UK.
  • Upon arrival, collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) from the designated UK post office and register at your institution.
